Job Overview
Under general supervision of the Supervisor, the endorsed Behind the Wheel (BTW) instructor executes the teaching objectives for learning safe driving skills as outlined by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The purpose of BTW instruction is to provide students the opportunity to gain the skills and experience needed to pass the road skills evaluation to be a licensed driver and to build students’ capacity for lifelong, conscientious and safe driving habits. This position requires applicants to be detail-oriented, analytical observers with excellent communication and leadership skills. Complete adherence to Virginia laws, codes and guidance is of the utmost importance when training students to be responsible citizens as operators of a motor vehicle and roadway users.
Roles and Responsibilities
The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; work may differ and other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate.
- Maintains an accurate record of student progress within BTW instruction.
- Schedules students’ BTW training with each high school point of contact, family and student via communication before the BTW sessions as well as during the required 14 BTW sessions (7 observing sessions and 7 driving sessions per in-car student).
- Submits required payroll and driving records, daily logs, road skills evaluation and special notes of interest to the LCPS central office.
- Develops lesson plans for and provide instruction in the areas of safe operation of a motor vehicle. Lesson plans should provide ample opportunity for defensive and anticipatory driving as students progress to more complex driving environments.
- Evaluates and communicates feedback to students and their families in an ongoing manner relating to students’ BTW progress.
- Completes and issues a copy of the Temporary Driver's License (TDL-180) to the parents of students who have successfully completed the BTW program, the school the student attends and the DMV.
- Educates families/guardians about their rights and responsibilities as they pertain to the students’ freedoms as a new driver.
- Engages in ongoing professional development relating to BTW instruction.
- Models safe, appropriate passenger behavior as the instructor in the vehicle. Refrains from the use of cell phones or other devices, provides minimal distraction to the observing student and driver, and provides assistance/intervention to the driver when necessary.
- Shows sustained effort and enthusiasm for developing responsible, young drivers.
Qualifications
Below are the minimum qualifications for this job. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are also acceptable.
Education
High School Diploma or GED required
Experience
Three (3) years of related work experience
Licenses and Certifications
Completion of Driver’s Education Training Program or holds or is eligible for a Collegiate Professional License with endorsement in Driver Education
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age and hold a valid Virginia driver’s license upon which the Department of Motor Vehicles has not levied more than six (6) demerit points (copy of pertinent DMV records must be provided prior to time of hire and must be provided annually)
- Must show proof of completed Driver’s Education Training Program
- Ability to work both inside and outside the vehicle in all weather conditions as deemed safe
- Basic knowledge of how to safely address various dashboard warning lights and basic vehicle maintenance
- Must be able to efficiently communicate verbal and written directions and feedback to students, parents, and central office
- Must be able to keep meticulous and legible records
