Position Overview

The School Security Officer works directly with the Division of Safety and Security and the local school Principal to help provide a safe environment for all students, staff and visitors. The School Security Officer assists the Principal in all things safety and security including school regulations regarding conduct. An employee in this position will respond to complaints of losses of personal and school property, develop procedures to deter trespassers from school property, and assist in the establishment and formal audit of local security and safety procedures, including the emergency response plan. The School Security Officer relates well and communicates with students, school staff, and the school community.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed in relation to the position. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate:

  • Assists in general supervision of maintaining order within the school grounds and buildings; assists with administrative enforcement of school regulations regarding conduct, and safety and security protocols; responds to complaints of losses of personal and school property; assists in the investigation of violations of the student code of conduct; develops procedures to deter trespassers from school property.
  • Acts as a mentor and positive adult role-model to students.
  • Serves on the school-based threat assessment team.
  • Provides student safety and supervisory assistance on school premises.
  • Oversees and coordinates parking and bus regulations on school grounds and reports accidents on school property.
  • Assists in the establishment and formal audit of local security and safety procedures including the emergency response plan.
  • Assists with and coordinates safety and security training for school-based personnel.
  • Assists with developing effective school-community relations and in maintaining a human relations climate which promotes a positive school environment.
  • Serves as liaison between law enforcement, fire safety officials, and school administrators.
  • Represents the school in court, as needed.

 

Qualifications

Below are the qualifications for this position:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or training to demonstrate the standards, concepts and guidelines to perform the responsibilities of the position
  • Four years’ experience preferred in supervising school-age children or young adults in any of the following or similar areas: law enforcement, security, juvenile justice system, teaching, teacher's assistant, coaching, counseling, tutoring
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations regarding student safety and conduct preferred, and the ability to enforce those regulations
  • Ability to relate to, communicate with, mentor, and supervise students
  • Ability to supervise and assist in implementing intervention programs for students displaying unacceptable behavior
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions, and to prepare clear and comprehensive oral and written reports
  • Ability to monitor student behavior and deter inappropriate behavior on school grounds and property
  • Valid driver’s license

 

Physical Requirements

The following provides a brief description of physical requirements for this position:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, climb, stoop, kneel, bend and walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or tools; reach with hands and arms and see and hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit and may be required to lift up to approximately 50 pounds.

The employee must have the ability to drive and navigate to multiple locations.  An employee in this position will require the ability to be mobile around school hallways and grounds on a daily basis. Sufficient vision is needed to be able to observe students and trespassers up to 100 yards away.

FLSA status: Non-Exempt

Months/Days/Hours: 10 months, 194 days, 8 hours per day

Salary Level: Universal 11

Salary Scale: https://www.lcps.org/compensation

Salary Range: $32.51- $41.96
